Budget controllers combine
fast DSP with periphery
Three new digital signal controllers provide improved feature sets and functionality and allow embedded control developers to address increased system complexity for innovative products
The TMS320F2801, TMS320F2806 and TMS320F2808 provide a leading 100MIPS for less than $5 in volume. By leveraging TI's leading digital signal processing (DSP) technology, the F2801, F2806 and F2808 controllers offer performance over 150% higher than other competitive Flash-based control devices, which currently peak at 60MIPS.

Controllers take top-resolution PWM onboard
Texas Instruments has begun sampling its TMS320F2801, TMS320F2806 and TMS320F2808 digital signal controllers
The F2801 controller offers a leading 20MIPS per dollar, 50% more than the closest competitor at 13MIPS per dollar.
'TI is redefining performance versus price for the embedded control space in response to our customers' requests', said Todd Solak, TMS320C2000 Worldwide Marketing Manager, TI.
'By delivering control optimised high performance at a competitive low price, TI is paving the way for embedded control designers to migrate to digital signal controllers without giving up the control peripherals and ease of use they have come to expect from MCUs.
They can now leverage TI DSP technology for performance, innovative integration and improved system efficiency in applications such as industrial drives, white goods and automotive systems'.
By designing with TI's digital signal controllers, engineers can not only tap into a powerful, easily programmable platform, they can also develop products with increased system capability and functionality while reducing costs and time to market.

Gigabit Ethernet transceiver is flexible interface
A six-channel gigabit Ethernet transceiver provides a full-featured, flexible interface in datacommunications and telecommunications equipment
For example, motor control designs can incorporate improved torque characteristics, such as torque at zero revolutions per minute and lower torque ripples, while lowering overall system costs through the integration of external peripherals like pulsewidth modulators and analogue to digital convertors.
The core also integrates a number of additional peripherals, including: a CAN controller; a watchdog timer; event managers; and communication peripherals such as SPI, SCI, I2C.
TI's high speed Flash memory, which supports program execution at 85MIPS, provides designers with immediate access to large amounts of programmable data, allowing up to 64Kword of storage with code security protection of important proprietary algorithms from theft or tampering, and 18Kword of RAM for time-critical code or data requiring faster access.
Crosscompatibility of the C2000 platform allows designers to start developing today with hardware tools like the TMS320F2812 development bundle (TMDXEVP2812), which gives system designers a complete and cost effective path to take their design from concept to production.
TI's extensive application specific software and signal processing libraries are standardised sets of software modules that can be seamlessly integrated within TI's integrated development environment, Code Composer Studio (CCStudio), to serve as fundamental building blocks for embedded control designs.
Leveraging these modules reduces time to market by enabling development of complete control applications without having to write optimised assembly language routines.
TI also offers a full array of training courses, including one-day seminars and multiday workshops, at locations around the world.
The F2801, 2806 and 2808 digital signal controllers extend the industry's highest control optimised TMS320C28x platform to nine code-compatible devices.
The C28x platform also includes the new ROM-based TMS320C2810, C2811 and C2812, as well as, the TMS320F2811 which each offer up to 150MIPS performance.
Samples of the F2801, F2806 and F2808 digital signal controllers will be available in November 2004.
