Power chips target Ethernet transmission
Texas Instruments has released its first power management ICs for the emerging 'power over Ethernet' market
The two new ICs allow DC power and data to be delivered and sourced over a single standard Ethernet cable, resulting in reduced system cost, increased capability and reliability for developers of Ethernet-based systems and appliances. Fully compliant with the soon-to-be ratified IEEE 802.3af standard, TI's devices are being designed into Ethernet-powered applications such as WLAN access points, IP phones, security systems, point-of-sale terminals and power sourcing equipment such as Ethernet routers, switches and hubs.

TI's new TPS2370 power interface switch manages discovery, classification and delivery of DC power to a powered device (PD) over a standard Ethernet twisted pair cable.
In addition, the new TPS2383 power sourcing equipment power manager (PSEPM) can independently manage power for up to eight Ethernet ports.
'The power over Ethernet space is an important focus of our high performance power management strategy, and today's announcement is a solid step into this market', said Rich Valley, Manager of TI's System Power Management Business.
'By offering high performance and fully compliant power over Ethernet semiconductor and system level solutions, TI is providing system designers with a way to quickly deliver cost-effective, data-driven applications to end consumers'.
Acting as an interface between the power source equipment and the powered device, the TPS2370 power interface switch provides an integrated solution for all necessary detection, classification, undervoltage lockout, inrush current limiting and switch field effect transistor (FET) control necessary to comply with the new standard.

The TPS2370 provides accurate PD detection through the use of an external 25kohm discovery resistor.
The TPS2383 manages power in multiple Ethernet ports.
All operations of the IC are controlled through register read and write operations over a standard I2C serial interface.
The TPS2383 manager has five selection pins, which permits the device to address up to 32 devices, and provide individual control and monitoring of up to 256 Ethernet ports from a single master I2C controller.
The TPS2370 power switch and TPS2383 power manager are available in volume today from TI and its authorised distributors.
The TPS2370 is packaged in an 8-pin (SOIC) or 8-pin thin shrink small outline package (TSSOP), and the TPS2383 comes in a 64-pin LQFP package.
Suggested resale pricing is $1.25 per unit for the TPS2370 and $7.00 for the TPS2383 in quantities of 1000 units.
Evaluation modules and an IP phone power system reference design are available today through the Texas Instruments power website.
