The Temex QEO LC93 high-stability oven-controlled crystal oscillator (OCXO) allows designers to reduce the power consumption of emergency locator transmitters, including 406MHz COSPAS-SARSAT search and rescue beacons, and thereby extend transmit time. The device combines the lowest power consumption of any comparable device, with extremely high frequency stability, good ageing characteristics and low phase noise, in a small outline DIL package. The QEO LC93 operates from a single 5V supply, and produces a 1.2 to 2.0V clipped sinewave output of 10-20MHz nominal frequency.
Current consumption throughout the operating temperature range of -40 to +55C is up to 66% lower than any other device certified for COSPAS-SARSAT systems.
Its frequency stability against temperature is better than 500ppb peak to peak, and ageing is +/-2ppb per day.
Typical phase noise at 10kHz is -150dBc/Hz.
COSPAS-SARSAT 406MHz beacons transmit an internationally recognised distress signal, which may also include positional data from navigation equipment onboard the vessel or aircraft in distress.
Receiving satellites and ground facilities direct search and rescue forces to the location.
Low power consumption and high frequency stability are essential to provide an accurate reference frequency and maintain the distress signal until these forces arrive.
The QEO LC 93 is also suitable for all radio systems requiring a highly stable frequency reference combined with very low consumption, including other types of emergency locator transmitters.
The QEO LC93 OCXO will be fully available in the second quarter of 2003, and will be priced at around Eur 40 in volumes of 10,000.
