SiTel is one of only a few companies to offer the popular and free-to-download uClinux OS on a 16bit platform, enabling cost-effective yet high-performance solutions.

SiTel Semiconductor has ported the uClinux open-source operating system to run natively on its 240MIPS SC14450 CAT-iq baseband processor.

The move makes SiTel one of only a few companies to offer the popular and free-to-download uClinux OS on a 16bit platform, enabling cost-effective yet high-performance solutions.

By taking advantage of the wide array of open-source applications already written for uClinux, SiTel's customers can further reduce development costs and time to market.

"We are committed to offering best-in-class telephony semiconductor solutions to enable our customers to build applications that deliver excellent performance", says Mark De Clercq, Product Marketing Manager at SiTel.

"Combining uClinux and its extensive open-source application library with our powerful, cost-effective baseband allows our customers to develop new products and enter new markets more quickly and with a lower investment".

uClinux is the most popular open-source operating system for embedded applications.

It is a derivative of the familiar Linux OS tailored for use on microcontrollers without Memory Management Units (MMUs).

This versatile OS has been successfully ported to numerous platforms, and has been used by a wide community of engineers and programmers for almost ten years.

It is also supported by extensive (C-language) libraries.

SiTel have ported the latest version of uClinux - based on the Linux kernel release 2.6 - onto the 16bit CompactRISC processor at the heart of its powerful SC14450 baseband processor.

The OS is delivered to customers as source code supported by a complete software development environment, test plan and full documentation.
