Rohde and Schwarz has assumed responsibility for the sale of EXFO products in Germany, including a new optical spectrum analyser for the company's FTB-400 universal test platform.

The model FTB-5230 is optimised for cost-efficient measurements on coarse wavelength division multiplex (CWDM) transmission systems, which are used primarily in public transportation networks and provide different services and protocols to a large number of users.

With wavelengths of 1250 to 1650nm, the CWDM standard covers the entire range of 18 channels with 20nm spacings.

The resolution bandwidth of less than 100pm allows measurements to be performed near the carrier for each channel.

The amplitude measurement range is from -64 to +10dBm.

The PC-based base unit makes it easy to store, log and postprocess data and provides a straightforward printout of the test results.

Handling is very convenient.

The spectral distribution is displayed within seconds at the stroke of a key.

The signal level and the wavelength, which is documented as a function of time, are monitored to show the signal stability of the system's uncooled laser diodes and their drift.

The two successfully launched analyser models, the FTB-5240 and the FTB 5240B, provide wavelengths up to 1650nm with resolutions of 65 and 33pm, respectively.

These models are ideal for use in dense wavelength division multiplex (DWDM) systems.

The three-slot OSA module 5230 can be integrated into an FTB-400 multitest platform version of seven rack-mount units and combined with a multiwavelength OTDR rack-mount unit and an all-round attenuation meter, creating further test functions to provide complete signal characterisation of a CWDM system.

Users thus have at their fingertips a low-weight, comprehensive test system that can also be battery-operated for field measurements.

The FTB-5230 spectrum analyser from EXFO is now available in Germany through Rohde and Schwarz.
