The SH7080 series is a new generation of SuperH microcontrollers with 80MHz high-speed operation

The devices offer a 1.6-fold improvement in performance over the previous SH7144 series, up to 512Kbyte of on-chip Flash memory, capable of constant single-cycle (12.5ns) access, and a comprehensive set of peripheral functions. The SH7080 series is designed for use in sophisticated, high-performance systems such as inverters and AC servos, and OA and consumer devices including home appliances, digital audio/video products, and liquid crystal projectors.

The five models in the SH7080 series each incorporate a 32bit SH-2 CPU and offer 3.3 or 5V single power supply operation, enabled by the provision of an on-chip power supply step-down circuit.

This makes it possible to cut back on the use of peripheral ICs such as an external power supply circuit or level shifter, and so reduce system costs.

A comprehensive set of on-chip peripheral functions is incorporated in the series, including three-phase PWM timers and memory controllers, which allow the direct connection of external memory, such as Flash, burst ROM or synchronous DRAM.

Also included is a 10bit A/D convertor offering twice the previous conversion speed, a synchronous serial communication unit, a DMA controller, an I2C bus interface channel, and four serial communication interface channels.

The series incorporates two multifunction timer pulse units, one (MTU2) comprising six 16bit timer counter channels, with a maximum 16 pulse input/output and three pulse input capability, and the other (MTU2S) providing three-phase PWM output capability for inverter products.

This enables dual-spindle control in FA systems and similar applications to be handled by a single SH7080 device, when previously it required two microcontrollers.

The MTU2 and MTU2S offer enhanced features compared with the MTU in current products, while start-up timing of the A/D convertor is greatly increased and functions ideal for motor control have also been added.

This enables the CPU load to be reduced during motor control.

On-chip debugging functions enable real-time debugging at the maximum operating frequency.

During system development, debugging is simplified by the on-chip Flash memory, which also facilitates program amendments after the completion of end product development.

Supported development environments are the USB-powered E10A-USB, which requires no external power supply, and the E200F, which provides faster emulation capability, allowing real-time tracing to be carried out at the full operation speed of 80MHz.

The package line-up has been extended to four different types: a 100-pin TQFP, and 112-pin, 144-pin and 176-pin LQFP packages.

This offers a choice to suit a variety of applications with differing mounting area constraints and functions.
