Two new single-chip amorphous TFT liquid crystal display controllers support 262K colour displays for mobile phones
Two new single-chip amorphous TFT liquid crystal display (LCD) controllers support 262K colour displays for mobile phones. The HD66782 supports a 132 x 132 pixel display, making it suitable for the European market, and has power consumption equivalent to that of an STN colour LCD. The HD66784 is the world's first single-chip TFT LCD controller capable of simultaneously driving a QCIF main screen (176 x 224) and subscreen (176 x 96).

Both controllers enable lower cost LCD modules and simplify development through the use of fewer component parts.
The HD66782 has an on-chip power supply which enables single-chip LCD drive.
Power consumption for 262K colour normal display, including the panel, is approximately 2mW, which is equivalent to that of an STN colour LCD.

This can be reduced further to approximately 0.8mW, with partial display, through power-down functions such as an eight-colour mode and standby modes.
This helps extend battery life in a mobile phone.
The provision of approximately 39Kbyte of on-chip display RAM offers 260K colour display capability and, together with proprietary liquid crystal drive circuitry, achieves high display quality.
The HD66782 is virtually the same size as an STN colour liquid crystal controller driving the same size of screen, making it possible to produce TFT LCD modules with high display quality at lower cost.
Connection to a baseband or application processor like Renesas SH-Mobile is possible via an 8/9/16/18bit high-speed bus interface, while image data exchange with a graphic IC, for example, is also possible via an RGB interface, enabling smooth moving image display.
The HD66784 has approximately 126Kbyte of on-chip display RAM that supports a 262K colour display, plus a controller that provides high-quality display on both the main and sub screen.
An eight colour display function and standby mode power-down functions enable lower power consumption, while the low 0.8mW LCD power consumption is virtually the same as that of an STN LCD.
The controller incorporates a variety of display functions, including OSD (on screen display), alpha blending for transparent display, and a resizing feature for image enlargement and reduction.
Both controllers include a high-speed moving image interface that allows direct reception of RGB signals from an MPEG-4 or similar graphics processing chip.
This enables smooth moving image display to be achieved and simplifies the creation of a variety of high-quality screen displays.
Sample shipments of both controllers are available now.
Both devices support chip-on-glass as the chip mounting method.
