The SH7720 is a 32bit SuperH RISC microprocessor that incorporates an SSL (Secure Socket Layer) hardware accelerator for faster secure network connectivity

The device also features peripheral functions that include a colour LCD controller and USB interface. This makes it suitable for various kinds of IT and mobile devices that are equipped with a secure browser display function, such as Internet-compatible and IP phones, PDAs, digital TVs and network-connectable audio devices.

The SH7720 is a functionally enhanced version of the current SH7727.

The device employs a 0.15-micron CMOS process and achieves reduced power consumption through the use of special on-chip memory control circuit techniques.

It has an SH3-DSP CPU core with a maximum operating frequency of 133MHz and high processing performance of 173MIPS.

This makes it possible to implement high-speed communication processing, and an on-chip DSP supports various kinds of middleware, such as popular audio codecs and JPEG processing for still-image display.

The on-chip SSL hardware accelerator reduces the heavy CPU software processing load of 3DES (Triple Data Encryption Standard) common key encryption/decryption and RSA encryption public key/private key processing.

This enables faster secure browser display processing and therefore a smoother browsing experience.

The comprehensive set of on-chip peripheral functions includes a colour LCD controller, version 1.1 USB interface (host and function), and a CompactFlash (CF) memory card interface.

There are also interfaces for MultiMediaCard (MMC), I2C bus and IrDA (version 1.0 support) in addition to a 16bit timer capable of PWM (pulsewidth modulation) waveform output for stepping motor control.

These functions make it possible to create highly sophisticated systems with a simple configuration.

The SH7720 is available in either a 17 x 17 or 11 x 11mm 256-pin CSP package, offering the user a choice to suit the end product design criteria, such as low cost or small size.

The 17 x 17mm CSP with a 0.8mm ball pitch employs a pin arrangement with I/O power supply being the outermost pins and the CPU core power supply being the innermost, enabling inexpensive four-layer board mounting.

The smaller 11 x 11mm CSP with a 0.5mm ball pitch is available for use in compact IT terminal devices.

Available development environment tools include evaluation boards such as Hitachi ULSI Systems' Solution Engine and Renesas Technology's E10A emulator.
