PoE midspans on show in Paris

PowerDsine has been invited to exhibit its PoE midspan solutions for IP telephony at the Alcatel Enterprise Forum from 21st to 23rd February in Paris.
The forum aims to provide CIOs and professionals from the telecomms, IT and contact centre industries with insights into innovative communications technologies and cost effective strategies for evolving to new IP architecture.
With a longstanding OEM partnership with Alcatel, PowerDsine will showcase its new 6500 PoE midspan family of which Alcatel is delivering the 6548 48-port version as an OEM product.
The new 6500 midspan family offers PowerDsine's new network management system PowerView Pro, offering SNMPv3 remote management with encrypted data transmission to secure power management actions and Web-based management from any PC in the network, avoiding external interference with the power management.
At the Forum PowerDsine will use case study examples to demonstrate how its 12-, 24- and newly introduced 48-port PoE midspans reduce installation costs, by removing the need to wire additional AC outlets and enable migration to IP telephony without requiring replacement of existing switch infrastructure.
As a founding member of the IEEE802.3af task force, PowerDsine has been a driving force behind the current PoE standard, as well the new "PoE Plus" Task Force (IEEE 02.3at), which seeks to deliver higher power levels to devices such as touch screen Voice over IP phones that require more than the 13W currently specified in the 802.3af standard.
The 6500 Midspan is also available in six-, 12- and 24-port versions.
The 24-port offers two alternative power supplies: Full-Power (400W), ideal for powering terminals with high power consumption, such as touch-screen VoIP phones and multichannel wireless LAN access points; and Managed-Power, using an advanced internal power management algorithm that reduces heat dissipation in the comms cabinet.
David Palmer Stevens, PowerDsine Sales Director Europe, said: "Now that IP telephony is becoming commonplace, enterprises are looking to vendors like Alcatel to inform their migration strategy".
"We are happy to take part in the forum to support our OEM partner and demonstrate routes to gaining additional features on the network, while protecting existing investment in switch infrastructure".
