Parker Hannifin's Electromechanical Division has launched a new high power stepper drive for cost-sensitive OEM applications

Known as the XL80, the new drive uses a specially developed power output stage, based on latest-generation mosfet technology, capable of delivering a peak current of 8A per phase from an 80V DC motor supply. The drive is suitable for use with any standard two-phase stepper motor, but for maximum performance is best teamed with one of Parker's SY series motors; when driven by the XL80, the largest motor produces 8Nm of torque at low speeds and over 300W of shaft power.

In common with Parker's other XL series drives, the XL80 is designed specifically as a high-performance, low-cost solution for the OEM market.

It employs cost-engineered packaging techniques and makes extensive use of surface-mount technology to facilitate semi-automated assembly and help reduce manufacturing overheads.

Housed in a robust metal case, the drive measures 175 x 50mm, with a depth of 130mm.

It is designed for panel mounting, using standard connectors and screw terminals for ease of installation, and simply requires an 80V DC motor supply and a 24V DC logic supply.

A compatible high-efficiency switch-mode power supply module is available, housed in a metal case with the same dimensions as the XL80 drive.

The XLPSU power module auto-adapts to supply voltages across the range 95 to 264V AC, creates both the 80V DC supply bus and the 24V DC logic supply, and is rated at 250W continuous output, 600W peak.

The XL80 stepper drive offers four user-selectable resolution settings, spanning 400 to 4000step/rev, to simplify control optimisation.

Standard features include programmable motor current and automatic current reduction at standby.

The drive is fully protected against short-circuits across or between motor windings, and is equipped with extensive condition monitoring circuitry to guard against overheating and supply faults.

A built-in fan provides cooling.

Parker's XL80 drives can be supplied as basic units with step-direction inputs, or as intelligent units incorporating an exceptionally powerful indexer.

The indexer version, known as the XL80i, offers RS232 serial communications as standard, and can be fitted with an optional CANbus interface.

It offers eight user-programmable I/O ports, which are expressly designed for robustness and use 24V levels throughout, ensuring a high degree of noise immunity and compatibility with virtually all PLCs on the market.

Parker has expended considerable effort in making the indexer easy to program, with the result that many programming operations can be carried out very efficiently, using just a few commands.

For example, predefined move profiles can be stored and then executed in response to a single program command or external input, which minimises programming effort and simplifies the implementation of fast-response control systems.

XL80i drives are shipped complete with Parker's EASI-Tools software, which enables users to fully configure the drive and to create, edit and save motion-control programs on a standard PC running Windows 95/98, ME, 2000 or NT4.
