5V-tolerant analogue switch aids USB flexibility
The NLAS2066 is billed as the industry's first overvoltage-tolerant analogue switch.
The NLAS2066 is billed as the industry's first overvoltage-tolerant analogue switch.
This innovative device permits input lines, output lines and USB lines to be shared on the same connector pins, thus reducing the size and lowering the costs for handheld products such as smart cellphones, PDAs, digital still cameras, digital video cameras and MP3 players.
The NLAS2066 is a dual single-pole/single-throw (SPST) switch.
Its overvoltage tolerance and low on-resistance resistance enable it to be used to isolate USB lines - permitting the sharing of these lines with standard I/O lines.
Because the device can withstand the USB requirement of up to 5.5V for 24h - regardless of operating voltage - the device meets the full USB specification.
The NLAS2066 may be operated at a low voltage, eliminating the need for an otherwise redundant 5.0V power supply.
The reduction in the required number of pins connected to the outside world and the number of power supplies required reduces the cost of manufacturing a USB-enabled system.
In addition, the lower operating voltage of the device and the reduction in the number of required power supplies, also reduces the power consumption of the entire system.
This improves battery life and reduces weight.
The NLAS2066 has reduced threshold levels in the control pins - permitting direct interface to a low-voltage microcontroller without the need for logic level translation.
This again helps to reduce cost and parts count.
"ON Semiconductor is rapidly expanding its already broad portfolio of MiniGates and analogue switches in order to provide our customers with the innovative solutions and high volume supplier they require", said Dan Huettl, ON Semiconductor, Director of Logic Products.
The NLAS2066 is offered in the ultrasmall, 2 x 3mm US8 package and priced at $0.25 per unit in 10,000 unit quantities.
