The NCP1560 is a voltage-mode pulsewidth modulation DC/DC controller for use in telecomms power convertors, high voltage power modules and 42V automotive systems

The NCP1560 is a voltage-mode pulsewidth modulation (PWM) DC/DC controller for use in telecomms power convertors, control driven synchronous rectification power convertors, high voltage power modules and 42V automotive systems. "The NCP1560 combines all the necessary features required in high-density isolated DC/DC modules and onboard designs for telecomms and automotive applications", said Andy Williams, Director of Power Conversion Products.

"No other controller available on the market offers this level of feature integration and performance".

The NCP1560 enables highly efficient, isolated DC/DC conversion with minimal external components.

It features several functions not found in competitive parts that help simplify design process and reduce system cost.

For example, the NCP1560 is designed with a control output for the main switch and a second output that can control a synchronous rectifier, an active clamp, or a reset switch.

Additionally, the dual control outputs have adjustable overlap delays that prevent simultaneous conduction and facilitate soft switching within various circuit topologies.

Because the device features a high voltage (21.5 to 150V) startup regulator, fewer external components are required in the system.

After initial startup, this regulator is disabled to reduce power consumption.

Yet another advantage the NCP1560 offers designers is a voltage mode operation with fast line feed-forward which delivers better regulation with line changes without some of the traditional problems associated with current mode control.

An extensive set of protection features provided by the NCP1560 eliminates the need for external supervisory functions.

Dual mode, overcurrent protection handles momentary overload and hard-short conditions differently for the best tradeoff in performance and safety.

The convertor enters a cycle-by-cycle current limit mode if an overload condition is detected.

If a hard-short condition is detected, the convertor enters the cycle skip mode, during which the convertor is disabled for a time period determined by the external cycle skip capacitor.

This reduces power dissipation and system stress.

An internal line under/overvoltage detector disables the controller if the line voltage is outside the selected operating range.

The NCP1560 oscillator frequency is selected using an external resistor.

The traditional timing capacitor is incorporated internally to improve noise susceptibility and reduce external components.

A trimmed oscillator frequency together with an accurate programmable maximum duty cycle facilitates magnetic design.

A maximum oscillator frequency up to 500kHz allows the designer to benefit from smaller size magnetic components.

The NCP1560 is offered in an SO-16 package and priced at $1.35 per unit in 10,000 unit quantities.
