Motorola has developed an advanced reference design to enable customers to quickly implement applications based on HCS12 microcontrollers

The alarm control panel reference design is one of many reference designs that Motorola offers complimentary to its registered semiconductor website users. These tools provide customers with application software, device drivers, hardware schematics and documentation to help reduce development time and costs for a number of applications.

The networked alarm control panel reference design describes how to set up and use features on the MC9S12DP256 Flash microcontroller (MCU), such as Flash memory, phase locked loop, interrupts, serial communications interface, serial peripheral interface and analogue to digital convertor.

It demonstrates how to connect to a sensor node, PC, input and output devices, connect to sensing alarm lines, generate sound and flashing LEDs, sense a rotary encoder, store configuration data and drive a liquid crystal display.

Based on Motorola's MC9S12DP256 Flash MCU, the reference design was developed by Motorola and Elektronikladen Mickrocomputer (Detmold, Germany), a member of Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector's Design Alliance Programme.

One of the main goals of the Design Alliance Programme is to provide Motorola's customers with a network of qualified third-party developers to help them create solutions using Motorola's embedded solutions.

The alarm control panel reference design is available in a modular fashion such that the hardware modules in the tool can be re-used for other HCS12 derivatives and other applications.

The reference design features are engineered to enable Internet connectivity through a modem line.

There are three alarm line inputs that may be used to connect industrial standard alarm contacts.

The alarm lines are designed to recognise external manipulations, such as attempts to cut the wires or shorten a line.

The reference design is also engineered to enable connection to several sensors and nodes in a home using a LIN bus.

Features include: MCU module with crystal and optional external memory; user interface with graphical LCD, jog dial and buttons; alarm line inputs for standard alarm contacts; LIN interface for networked sensor node; a temperature sensor; switched alarm outputs; modem for connection to a central office; and a sample application that demonstrates the functionality of the alarm control panel.

The HCS12 Flash-based 16bit MCUs, such as the MC9S12DP256 used in the networked alarm control panel reference design, are engineered to provide the flexibility for cost-effective software upgrades through in-application programmability and reprogrammability in development, production and in the field.

The alarm control panel reference design is available now for download at no cost to registered users of Motorola's semiconductor website.
