Designers of low-cost automotive communication networks will now be able to develop more flexible networks in less time, thanks to a new family of 8bit microcontrollers from Motorola

The 68HC908EY Flash-based microcontrollers are designed to enable simplified development of Local Interconnect Network (LIN) systems for automobiles through an on-chip variable frequency oscillator and an enhanced serial communications interface (ESCI) module. LIN is a low-cost, class A serial communication system for distributed electronic systems in vehicles.

The LIN Consortium developed the LIN specification as a low-end multiplex solution that complements the Controller Area Network (CAN) protocol, while helping to reduce development, production, and servicing of automotive electronics.

Complementing the 68HC908EY family, the 68HC908GZ family of Flash-based MCUs enables simplified development of LIN master systems for automobiles, and incorporates the CAN protocol (Version 2.0A/B) on chip.

"As the world's leading supplier of automotive semiconductors, Motorola has committed tremendous resources to helping our customers enhance their automotive communications systems", said Paul Grimme, corporate vice president and general manager for Motorola's 8/16-Bit Products Division.

"These new devices combine proven 68HC08 reliability with Motorola's decades of expertise in automotive electronics".

Based on the industry standard 68HC08 core, the 68HC08EY and 68HC08GZ families are upwardly compatible with the industry's best-selling 8bit MCU family, the 68HC08.

The new MCUs are qualified to full automotive industry standards, including high temperature, shock, vibration and humidity.

With a variety of memory and peripheral options, these devices are designed to act as "slave" controllers for a range of in-vehicle communications and networking needs for numerous body electronics and powertrain applications.

The 68HC908EY16 is the first device in a family of dedicated LIN slave MCUs from Motorola.

Features include: a high-performance 8bit 68HC08 core; 4-16Kbyte of ROM or on-chip Flash memory with 10K write erase; up to 256byte of RAM; an on-chip RC oscillator to aid synchronisation with the LIN bus; an enhanced serial communications interface (SCI) that allows LIN break detection and synchronisation byte measurement capability without the use of an external timer channel; up to eight channels of 10bit A/D conversion; two 16bit dual channel timers and a serial peripheral interface (SPI); and a small-footprint 32-pin QFP package option.

The 68HC908GZ16 is a family of dedicated LIN master MCUs from Motorola.

Features include: a high-performance 8bit 68HC08 core; up to 60Kbyte of ROM or on-chip Flash memory with 10K write erase; enhanced SCI; up to 12 channels of 10bit A/D conversion; SPI; and a small-footprint 32-pin QFP package option.

Motorola also offers the 68HC(9)08AZ family of LIN master MCUs, based on the msCAN module, complemented by the 16bit HC9S12 family for high-performance LIN master node applications.

Motorola's system solutions include chips, software libraries and example application code, development tools, comprehensive technical documentation, and engineering support.

All of these offerings help make it easier for customers to design, develop, debug and bring products to market faster using Motorola's 68HC08EY and its other MCU families.

Samples of the 68HC908EY16 MCU are available now, with production volume expected in the first quarter of 2003.

Its suggested unit list price in 10,000-piece quantities is US $4.70.

Development kits are scheduled to be available in fourth quarter of 2002, including supporting software and tools.

Samples of the 68HC908GZ16 are available now, with production volume expected in February, 2003.

Its suggested unit list price in 10,000-piece quantities is $3.50.

Development kits are scheduled to be available in fourth quarter of 2002, including supporting software and tools.

Motorola plans to introduce additional low-cost ROM and Flash-based 68HC08EY MCU derivatives.

Versions with and without analogue-to-digital convertors are also currently available, allowing fully scalable systems and maximum re-use of existing software and hardware.

Motorola is also introducing power management ICs that complement the existing portfolio of LIN MCUs.

In addition, the MC33689 and MC33895 intelligent distributed control drivers are ideal for LIN systems that use DC motors, stepper motors and lamps.
