Synchronicity for SONET/SDH
Zarlink Semiconductor has announced immediate availability of a high-performance timing chip that synchronises SONET/SDH networking equipment
Zarlink's off-the-shelf MT90401 is the first in a planned family of SONET/SDH digital PLLs. The device features an integrated architecture that simplifies system design and collapses board space requirements by up to 80% compared to proprietary clock designs or module-based clocks. In today's price-sensitive communications environment, network equipment designers are seeking high performance and flexible microchips for cost-effective timing applications in a wide variety of optical network designs.

Zarlink's MT90401 complies with the Telcordia and ITU-T specifications for SONET/SDH systems, and can be used in SONET/SDH add/drop multiplexers and uplinks, terminal multiplexers, integrated access devices, and ATM edge switches.
"Network synchronisation is a complex and necessary function, but does not provide equipment vendors with a competitive advantage", said Michael Rupert, product line manager, Zarlink Semiconductor.
"With the MT90401, our customers can avoid designing their own clocks or using more costly modules, and focus their resources on features that differentiate their products from the competition".

The MT90401 is a SONET/SDH system synchroniser that meets the requirements of Telcordia's GR-253-CORE standard for Sonet Stratum 3 and SONET minimum clocks, and the ITU-T's G.813 Option 1 and Option 2 standard for SDH equipment clocks.
The MT90401 performs most synchronisation functions using an inexpensive 20MHz oscillator as the master clock, avoiding the need for the large and costly oscillators used in network clocks.
Measuring only 16 x 16mm, the MT90401 can be used by designers on any card in their system to meet hitless reference switching and other timing requirements.
They can also use the MT90401 with a higher-performance oscillator to build a complete SONET or SDH network clock.
The MT90401 operates in free-run, locked or holdover modes, and ensures precise system timing even with disturbances on the incoming synchronisation signals.
The device's holdover accuracy of 0.02ppm allows network equipment to continue to send and receive data even when the source of network synchronisation is occasionally interrupted or changed.
Now in volume production, the MT90401 is priced at US$67 in 1000-off quantities.
The device is packaged in an 80-pin LQFP.
Zarlink offers extended in-house support, including a customer evaluation board costing US $500.
