The MVTX2800 family of Gigabit Ethernet switching ICs from Zarlink Semiconductor (formerly Mitel Semiconductor) deliver full-wire speed forwarding and leading quality of service features to designers of metropolitan optical access equipment. Metro service providers (MSPs) are building fibre-optic networks that use Ethernet as a protocol for connecting businesses to metropolitan area networks (MANs) and the Internet.
The MVTX2800 family provides gigabit Ethernet for "last mile" access equipment.
The MVTX2800 family delivers optimised performance in metro access equipment and applications such as aggregation equipment for the emerging multi-dwelling-unit/multi-tenant-unit (MDU/MTU) market, voice/data stackable wiring closet switches, edge routers, workgroup switches and storage area networks.
Gigabit Ethernet is quickly emerging as an economical technology for MANs and wide area networks (WANs).

According to Cahners In-Stat Group, the market for Gigabit and 10-Gigabit Ethernet is expected to exceed US $24 billion by 2004, with a compound annual growth rate pegged at 55%.
The MVTX2800 family consists of four- and eight-port versions of Gigabit Ethernet switches.
The eight-port managed switch supports 12 million packets per second nonblocking throughput for full wire-speed forwarding.
Programmable to also support 10/100 Ethernet speeds, the Gigabit ports provide Layer 2 forwarding and Layer 3 and 4 classification.
The devices are ideal for handling time-sensitive voice and video traffic in convergent networks, as delay bound scheduling results in output delay of less than 160us under heavily congested conditions.
The rate control feature on Zarlink Semiconductor's MVTX2800 chips enables MSPs to tailor bandwidth-based services to individual customers, by controlling the data rate on each Gigabit port.
MSPs also need to identify each customer with a unique VLAN (Virtual LAN) tag.
The MVTX2800 supports 4096 VLAN customer tags compared with other solutions that support only 256 VLAN customer tags.
