Ideal for space-constrained applications, such as cellphones, smartphones, PDAs, MP3 players and portable video players that are attached to USB ports for connectivity or charging.

New from Maxim Integrated Products are the MAX4987AE and MAX4987BE overvoltage-protection (OVP) controllers with internal overcurrent protection These devices integrate low-capacitance (3pF, typical) diodes to provide robust, +/-15kV ESD protection (Human Body Model) for High-Speed USB and USB (full-speed or low-speed) D+/D- signals

The MAX4987AE and MAX4987BE are ideal for space-constrained applications, such as cellphones, smartphones, PDAs, MP3 players and portable video players that are attached to USB ports for connectivity or charging.

To reduce external component count and save space, the MAX4987AE and MAX4987BE integrate a low-on-resistance N-channel FET that protects low-voltage systems from overvoltages up to 28V.

They provide an overvoltage trip level of 6.15V, and undervoltage trip levels of 2.55V (MAX4987AE) and 4.2V (MAX4987BE), with a startup delay of 30ms.

A flag signal notifies the microcontroller when an overvoltage or undervoltage fault condition occurs.

The MAX4987AE and MAX4987BE also feature internal overcurrent protection of 1.5A (minimum) to protect the circuitry against short-circuit conditions.

The devices can be controlled by an enable input.

The MAX4987AE and MAX4987BE are available in small, 2 x 3mm, 8-pin TDFN packages and are fully specified over the -40 to +85C extended temperature range.

Prices start at US $1.30 (1000-up).
