Conference features an international cast
The regulatory and standards conference stream for Radio Solutions 2003 features a number of international speakers
This year's Radio Solutions conference and exhibition will be opened by Emmanuel Faussurier from ANFR, the French radiocommunications agency. In his keynote address, Faussurier will explain how the French Government views short range devices and their market development. Karl Heinz Rosenbrock, ETSI's Director General will discuss ETSI's role and influence in the development of EU radio standards and increasingly how ETSI is working with other regions to achieve global standardisation.

Other papers in the regulatory and standards conference include "863-870MHz band sharing: living with the enemy" by Nick Long, Great Circle Design.
Long will describe new techniques such as "adaptive frequency agility" and "listen before transmit", looking at the relevance of duty cycle definitions and how these compare with spread spectrum and other modulation techniques in maximising spectral sharing.
This will be of major importance for the future development of all short-range devices but in the first instance, in the harmonised 863-870MHz band.

Sigurd Bolt Sorensen of Bolt Consult will present "The future for ultra-wideband in Europe; alternative technologies and markets".
Considered politically "hot", ultra-wideband by definition works over very wide frequency bands.
Moves to allow its use in the 3-10GHz range are meeting strong opposition from those who have made great financial investments buying spectrum at government auctions.
Those in favour say that UWB is a low-level signal appearing in the noise floor and will not interfere with other services.
Others take the view that when the cumulative effects are taken into account there will be enough interference to affect signal/noise ratios that will involve huge infrastructure costs.
Who is right?
The matter is further complicated by the emergence of alternative types of UWB that are being proposed.
A lively discussion can be expected.
This year's conference and exhibition will be held at ETSI in Sophia Antipolis near Nice.
Now in its 12th year, Radio Solutions will be held on 14th and 15th October 2003.
