LSI Logic has celebrated shipping one million units of its L2161 universal cable transceiver solution for DOCSIS cable modems with the release of a new cable modem product. The L2162 which provides an optimal, cost-effective solution for voice-over-IP (VoIP) and other PacketCable applications. "Cable operators have widely deployed interoperable DOCSIS network equipment, enabling a mass retail market for standards-based cable modems in North America", said Michael Harris, president of Kinetic Strategies, a Phoenix, AZ-based cable industry research firm.

"Shipping one million units of the L2161 is an important milestone for LSI Logic in the DOCSIS silicon market".

Building on the success of the L2161, the L2162 is the company's next-generation cable modem chip for DOCSIS, EuroDOCSIS, and DVB In-Band products.

The L2162 integrates USB and 100BaseT Ethernet for home networking capabilities, eliminating the need for external devices and reducing overall bill of materials.

For VoIP applications, the L2162 integrates the glue logic for a seamless connection to the LSI Logic ZSP digital signal processor, and includes on-chip circuitry capable of driving up to four SLICs (subscriber line interface circuits).

In addition, the speed of the microprocessor has been increased almost 25% to give manufacturers the ability to implement more sophisticated applications such as SOHO (small office/home office) and VoIP modems.

These product enhancements provide additional revenue streams for MSOs (multiple system operators) and potential costs savings for consumers by enabling MSOs to offer four telephone lines and full multimedia services in accordance with PacketCable specifications.

"We are thrilled that the L2161 cable transceiver has been so well received in the marketplace", said Christopher Adams, vice president of broadband gateway products for LSI Logic.

"The fact that we have shipped over one million units of this device coupled with the increased speed and integration of our next-generation L2162 cable modem IC, builds on our base as a leading supplier of semiconductors for consumer products.

LSI Logic is committed to being a complete silicon solutions provider for the networked digital home".

In addition to the L2161 and L2162 transceivers, LSI Logic offers the Hi-IQ DPS7000 RF tuner for cable modems.

For cable set-top box applications, LSI Logic provides a complete solution, including the L2151 cable transceiver and choice of AViA-9600 or SC2000/SC2005 decoders.
