Hot-swap controllers protect low-voltage rails
The new Endura ISL6117 and ISL6120 low-voltage hot-swap controllers allow boards to be safely inserted and removed from live backplanes
The ISL6117 controls a 3.3V rail and the ISL6120 controls a 2.5V rail. Both ICs are targeted for use on server motherboards for low-voltage hot-swap power control and are offered in the space-saving 8-lead SOIC package. Intersil leads the industry with the most cost effective hot plug/hot swap controller and DC/DC convertor solutions.

"The ISL6117 and ISL61120 ICs join our previously released ISL6115 (12V) and ISL6116 (5V) hot swap controllers to offer our customers a full range of backplane power control", said Tommy Sokola, Marketing Manager for Intersil's Hot Swap Power Control Products.
"The new low-voltage ISL6117 and ISL6120 single rail power distribution controllers offer the full complement of features needed for critical server and storage systems applications.
All of our server hot swap power control solutions provide our customers high reliability along with space, component count and cost savings".
More than just programmable circuit breakers, the ISL6117 and ISL6120 controllers offer a rich feature set that includes: undervoltage monitoring and "power good" notification, programmable overcurrent detection and fault isolation, programmable current regulation, programmable current limit time to latch off, adjustable turn on ramp for soft-start and fast submicrosecond response to a dead short.
Although designed primarily for high side switch control, both ICs can also be used in a low side configuration for control of much higher voltage potentials such as 48V.

With an input voltage range from 2.7 to 5.5V, the ISL21007 voltage reference is an ideal choice for portable instrumentation applications where power and noise are a concern
Both products offer customers a high degree of integration that results in savings in board space and balance of materials costs.
In addition, customers benefit from design and application flexibility, which yields lower manufacturing costs.
Complete reference designs and evaluation boards are available.
The ISL6117 and ISL6120 provide Intersil's IntelliTrip dual-level current limiting technology for precise current control and protection.
For overcurrent (OC) protection, the voltage across the sense resistor is monitored and compared to the user-programmed current-regulation (CR) voltage threshold value.
When the voltage exceeds the CR threshold, the controller enters the current regulation mode, holding the current at the programmed level until either the OC event passes, in which case the mosfet is again fully enhanced and the C(TIM) capacitor is discharged, or the programmed time out period expires, in which case the FET is latched off.
The IC responds to a severe OC load (voltage across sense resistor more than 150mV over the OC voltage threshold set point) by turning off the FET in about 10us.
It then slowly ramps up the gate voltage to turn on the FET until it is fully turned on or the CR level is reached.
If the CR level is once again reached, it goes into current regulation for the time out period and then latches off.
