New from GD Technik is the first member of Atmel's AT86RF401 family of innovative smart RF data-transmission devices

The AT86RF401 comprises three different devices: one for Europe (AT86RF401E at 434MHz transmission frequency), one for the USA (AT86RF401U optimised for operation at 315MHz) and a third device that can be configured externally for any output frequency between 250 and 450MHz by the user (AT86RF401X).

Aimed at low-cost, high volume industrial, consumer and portable wireless data markets, the devices offer designers an extremely cost-competitive solution.

Kim Allen, GD Technik's Product Marketing Manager comments: "Designers of wireless data transmitter applications, including door opening applications, are constantly seeking solutions that improve performance, integration and cost for their products.

Atmel's family of smart RF devices addresses all of these issues by providing full system-level integration and innovative design techniques in a low cost CMOS process technology".

Each smart RF microtransmitter contains an integrated PLL-stabilised frequency synthesiser, 6dBm RF power amplifier, powerful in-system programmable AVR RISC processor, 2Kbyte of Flash program memory and 128byte of EEPROM for data.

The only other items required to create a complete wireless data transmitter are a crystal, single battery, a few passive components and switches, and a foil trace tuned loop antenna.

Device flexibility is provided by user-programmable output frequencies (250 to 450MHz), output power (-30 to 6dBm typically), AVR microcontroller clock frequency, output data rate (up to 20Kbit/s) and data pulse encoding techniques (for example NRZ and Manchester).

The AT86RF401 family eliminates the need for an external loop filter, SAW resonator/oscillator and antenna driver.

It also operates with a supply below 2V, which allows continued operation when the LiMnO2 coin cell power supply approaches the end of its life.

The integrated AVR RISC microcontroller provides the user with full flexibility in implementing proprietary rolling code algorithms and transmitter pulsed data encoding security routines.

Additionally, 2Kbyte of in-system reprogrammable Flash memory (1K x 16) provides OEMs with a cost-effective means for field upgrades and/or quick software improvements and modification.

Atmel's AT86RF401 is packaged in a space saving and inexpensive 20-pin TSSOP.
