PWM controller is optimised for LCD PCs
New from Fairchild Semiconductor is the FAN5232 adjustable PWM buck controller for LCD PCs
New from Fairchild Semiconductor, the FAN5232 adjustable PWM buck controller for LCD PCs allows designers of PCs to replace silver-box-style, multiple-voltage power supplies with a low parts-count solution running from a standard "brick" AC wall adapter or onboard battery pack. Featuring both a 12V/adjustable output PWM buck controller for high-current devices such as hard disk drives, DVD or CD-ROM drives, and regulated, always-on 3.3 and 5V regulator outputs capable of 50mA for system microcontroller standby power, the FAN5232 compliments the Fairchild Semiconductor FAN5235 a 3.3 and 5V output PWM controller.

Together the FAN5232 and FAN5235 present a complete chipset for powering LCD PCs and Internet appliances.
The synchronous PWM architecture used in the FAN5232 accepts input voltages ranging from 5.6 to 24V and is stable over a wide range of input and output conditions.
This flexibility allows it to operate with a wide variety of AC adapters or multiple-cell battery packs, providing conversion efficiency of up to 96% in typical applications.
And, although aimed at 12V peripheral supply duty at up to 8A, the output of the flexible FAN5232 can be adjusted from 5V to up to 80% of the input voltage.
Other features include "power-good" indication, an independent shutdown for ACPI interfaces, output enable/soft start, undervoltage lockout (UVLO), output overvoltage protection, and precision adjustable current limiting using mosfet Rds(on) current sensing.
The FAN5232 is available in a 14-pin TSSOP.
An evaluation board is also available.
