Elma has developed a modular chassis specifically to meet the demanding military requirements of mounting VME, VME64X or CompactPCI in fighting vehicles on land, sea and air

Responding to the pressure for reduced cost and accelerated project timescales, Elma has developed a modular chassis specifically to meet the demanding military requirements of mounting VME, VME64X or CompactPCI in fighting vehicles on land, sea and air. Not only is cost and risk reduced by holding prequalified military-grade components in stock, but the comprehensive electrical screening and mechanical isolation options provide a benign internal environment, enabling COTS cards and peripherals to be safely deployed in rugged applications.

Traditional military enclosures are welded for strength, but lack flexibility and are usually custom designed, while commercial systems are flexible, but lack the mechanical integrity for rugged applications.

By analysing structural and configuration needs across a wide range of applications including tanks, helicopters and submarines, Elma has designed the new 12R2 COTS system of co-ordinated off-the-shelf frames, covers, ruggedised side-plates, vibration isolators and multifunctional extrusions.

The 12R2 COTS system also includes precharacterised subassemblies such as backplanes, fans, power supplies, filters, controls and indicators, providing a versatile route to meeting military standards such as MIL-STD-461D (EMC), -810E and -167 (shock and vibration) with minimum risk.

At the heart of the 12R2 COTS system is a range of specially designed welded side-plates and custom extrusions, with all plates protected by a chemical conversion coating to MIL-C-5541E Class 3.

The ruggedised side-plates provide structural integrity, while the versatile extrusions enable configuration to suit specific size and shape requirements.

The system also includes a comprehensive range of electrical options, including wiring looms and patch panels, together with advanced gasketing and shock/vibration isolation.

The system is fully supported by application notes, and Elma UK's customisation service can deliver a complete customised system, tested and ready to receive plug-in cards.
