Dynamic gain equaliser
for long-haul optical nets
Cypress Semiconductor subsidiary Silicon Light Machines has developed a new dynamic gain equaliser (DGE) for dense wave-division multiplexing (DWDM) communication systems
Cypress Semiconductor subsidiary Silicon Light Machines hasdeveloped a new dynamic gain equaliser (DGE) for densewave-division multiplexing (DWDM) communication systems. TheModel 2200 represents the next generation of DGEs, providingcontinuous, spectrally seamless gain equalisation in long-hauloptical networks.

'The Model 2200 DGE is a breakthroughproduct for Cypress', said Cypress CEO TJ Rodgers.'It's our first optical networking subsystem, one thatleverages SLM's expertise in MEMS and optics as well asCypress's world-class capabilities in optical networking andsemiconductor manufacturing.
It's a leading-edge productthat further extends our offerings in the optical communicationsmarket beyond networking linecards to the long-haul connectionsbetween boxes'.
The Model 2200 DGE works in DWDM systems, balancing channels within an unprecedented +/-0.1dB over adynamic range of 15dB.

It independently attenuates optical powerover multiple spectral regions, enabling carriers to add/dropchannels on demand without affecting adjacent-channel powerlevels regardless of channel count.
The Model 2200 is the firstsuch device to employ diffractive microelectromechanical system(MEMS) technology with ultra-high spectral resolution.
'InDWDM systems, adding or dropping channels causes amplifier gainprofiles to change', said Tom Werner, CEO of Silicon LightMachines.
'Even a tiny change in power level can cause majorcommunications problems.
The Model 2200 has high attenuationaccuracy, is spectrally seamless and offers dynamic control toavoid these problems altogether.
It's the next-generationDGE'.
The Model 2200 DGE is a seamless one-dimensional arrayof variable optical attenuators.
It provides a dynamic range of15dB, less than 6dB of insertion loss, and -40dB of return loss.Spectral power ripple is less than 0.1dB; equalisation time isunder 1.0ms.
The subsystem dissipates less than 5W of power andcomplies with Telecordia's GR-1221 specification (GR-63 forcontrol electronics).
'As carriers transition to dynamicnetworks, they require a new grade of optical components thatfacilitate seamless reconfiguration', said Daryl Inniss, senior optical analyst for RHK.
'Silicon LightMachines' technology is aimed at delivering precise powermanagement in a DWDM spectrum - allowing communications providersto improve performance and extend the reach of their opticalnetworks'.
The Model 2200 DGE subsystem, including thecontrol electronics, optics module and optical circulator, issampling now, with full production expected during the first halfof 2002.
