COTS Unix systems take charge onboard
PowerMaxion and Power Hawk real-time Unix-based multiprocessing systems are deployed on the US Navy's newly commissioned USS Pinckney
The Pinckney is the first Aegis class destroyer to be completely outfitted with COTS-based technology, replacing all legacy military-specific computers used previously. Six additional US Navy Aegis class ships are currently equipped with Concurrent real-time systems with future plans for more than 26 ships.

High-performance iHawk multiprocessor systems running real-time RedHawk Linux operating system and its ImaGen image generation solution will be used by Lockheed Martin
PowerMaxion and Power Hawk systems powered by Concurrent's PowerMax OS real-time Unix operating system are the central computing resources in the Pinckney's SPY-1D(V) radar system and weapons control system/fire control system (WCS/FCS).
Eight-processor PowerMaxion symmetric multiprocessing systems power the SPY-1D(V) radar system to detect low-altitude, reduced cross section targets in heavy clutter environments in the presence of intense electronic countermeasures.
Four-processor PowerMaxion systems are used in the WCS/FCS to support the firing of missiles and artillery against airborne and surface threats.

Concurrent Power Hawk single-board computers are used in SPY, and WCS/FCS and the command and decision (CND) element of the combat system.
The CND, which incorporates four single-processor and four quad-processor closely coupled Power Hawk systems, increases the capabilities of the combat system by integrating all of the ship's sensors, weapons systems and other critical systems together.
Power Hawk and PowerMaxion are powerful, scalable PowerPC-based VME multiprocessor systems with built-in support for real-time applications including interrupts, clocks and timers, flexible VME and PCI I/O subsystems.
Concurrent PowerPC-based systems run PowerMax OS, a real-time Unix-based, Posix-compliant operating system that offers guaranteed, deterministic, real-time response.
Also available is a complete set of compilers, libraries and GUI tools needed for a productive development environment for real-time applications.
In addition, Concurrent offers its iHawk family of real-time systems featuring Intel Xeon and AMD Opteron processors running Concurrent's RedHawk Linux real-time operating system.
"We congratulate the US Navy on the commissioning of its first totally COTS-based destroyer", said Warren Neuburger, President, Concurrent Integrated Solutions Division.
"Concurrent is proud to contribute our real-time solutions and expertise in support of US national defence.
We wish the crew mission success and safe passage".
