Cabot Communications, the specialist digital TV software supplier, will unveil the first pan-European digital TV suite to support both satellite DVB-S and digital terrestrial DVB-T transmissions today at Mediacast 2004. The Eclipse middleware and Callisto Over-Air-Download modules within Cabot's Digital TV Suite have been extended to support the extensive requirements of DVB-S across Europe. The enhanced Digital TV Suite offers significant savings for manufacturers who, for the first time, can use a single middleware stack to develop satellite and terrestrial receivers for multiple European markets.

It also includes a fully featured, multilanguage, reference user interface (UI), allowing manufacturers to deploy the same branded look and feel across a complete range of Europe-wide digital products.

The UI is optimised to cater for complexity of thousands of channels and includes an electronic programme guide (EPG) as well as multiple favourite lists.

Keith Potter, Managing Director of Cabot Communications comments: "With the impending analogue switch-off and strong European demand for retail free-to-air satellite receivers, manufacturers are increasingly under pressure to bring strongly branded and high-specification receivers to market very quickly".

"We are committed to continuously developing our Digital TV Suite to meet the increasingly complex development needs of manufacturers catering for multiple platforms in multiple markets".

"Cabot is proud to be announcing yet another first for the European digital TV market, by providing a single code-base to support both satellite and terrestrial receivers, allowing our customers to significantly reduce the cost of migrating from a terrestrial to satellite platform and to develop a single user interface for use across their product range within previously unattainable timescales".

The Eclipse digital TV middleware is compatible with on all popular digital TV hardware platforms also supports multiple satellites, DiSEqC control, subtitles (both DVB and EBU teletext and Dolby AC3 audio).

It also incorporates a common interface (CI) stack, able to support multiple encrypted pay-TV channels via conditional access modules (CAMs).

The Callisto Over-Air-Download (OAD) module, also part of the Cabot's Digital TV Suite, now has additional functionality to support the extensive requirements of DVB-S, such as user specific messages indicating a scheduled download on a particular service.

The Callisto OAD module now supports not only the UK D-Book based software upgrade mechanism, but also the EU based DVB SSU (simple and enhanced profile) download standard to enable robust and secure upgrades of receivers in the field via broadcast.
