Bluetooth MCU cuts
handset component count

The award winning BenQ-Siemens S88 handset contains CSR's BlueCore3-ROM silicon

The new handset incorporates the latest OLED (organic LED) technology and v1.2 Bluetooth connectivity to support and enhance an array of integrated multimedia features. The use of BlueCore3-ROM technology and BlueCore host software (BCHS) further cements CSR's position as the preferred wireless connectivity partner for handset manufacturers.

The S88 features an integrated 2.0Mpixel camera with auto focus and 16x digital zoom.

High-quality video is captured with the in-built MPEG4 video recorder and all media is stored on the handset's 20Mbyte internal memory and external micro-SD card.

The triband GSM handset also features an integrated music player supporting MP3 and AAC.

In order for consumers to fully appreciate the multimedia features of the S88, the handset employs the latest 2.0in active matrix OLED display (256K colours, 176 x 220 pixel).

CSR's BlueCore3-ROM technology is at the heart of the S88 allowing the handset to print photos wirelessly to a Bluetooth-enabled printer and share its multimedia content with other Bluetooth-enabled devices.

CSR's BlueCore3-ROM silicon provides the S88 with a fully compliant Bluetooth v1.2 platform with hardware to implement error-corrected eSCO (Extended Synchronous Connection Oriented) links.

BlueCore3-ROM is a complete single-chip solution with on chip microcontroller and 4Mbit ROM and has been designed to reduce the number of external components required for production.

CSR's silicon also incorporates auto-calibration and built-in self-test (BIST) routines to simplify development, type approval and testing allowing production times to be reduced along with overall production costs and the bill of materials (BOM).

BenQ-Siemens' new handset also includes BCHS, which provides a fully integrated Bluetooth software solution.

BCHS provides the upper layers of the Bluetooth protocol stack (above HCI, or optionally RFCOMM) plus a large library of profiles such as hands-free profile (HFP) and Headset profile (HSP).

Reduction of overall power consumption is achieved through BCHS implementing all the low power modes such as deep sleep mode which minimises the power consumption of Bluetooth when it is not in operation.

Sebastian Koh, VP Sales Asia Pacific, for CSR commented: 'Bluetooth connectivity is a necessity for today's mobile devices'.

'CSR is committed to working closely with OEMs in order to help them implement market-leading Bluetooth connectivity into their designs'.

Koh added: 'CSR will continue to provide the most innovative wireless silicon and software on the market that meets production cost and time to market requirements'.
