Byte Paradigm recently released the GP-22050, a multipurpose PC-based USB 2.0 module used to stream data between a PC and an embedded or remote system. Base modes of operation are: pattern generator/ADWG, logic analyser/data logger and JTAG port controller. Because PC-based instrumentation devices are controlled with software built on top of non-real-time OS, the 'continuous throughput' of such device - that is the datarate that a PC can sustain to stream huge amounts of data through a given connection - is especially critical.
This parameter is intrinsically PC- and software-dependent and cannot be guaranteed for all PC/instrument associations.
Byte Paradigm conducted series of tests with desktop and laptop PCs equipped with USB 2.0 ports.
Results show that most Pentium-4 systems are able to reach up to 11Mbyte/s (88Mbit/s) data transfer rate for any direction and to sustain it for virtually unlimited data quantities.

'It is not just a matter of limiting the time that you'll wait to upload and download the data to and from your embedded hardware', says Frederic Leens, Sales and Marketing Manager at Byte Paradigm.
'An efficient management of the up and down links is necessary for a real PC-based instrumentation approach: it leverages the PC resources to store virtually unlimited amounts of data 'on the fly' and improves the interactivity with your system under test'.
'We are very conscious that careful hardware/software optimisation is one of the keys of the success of PC-based test and measurement'.
'Achieving over 10Mbyte/s with nowadays very common PCs and our entry-level GP-22050 USB 2.0 device lets us quite confident we'll do even better with the futures devices to come'.
Byte Paradigm has released a technical note on its website to describe and explain the performance criteria used to characterise the GP-22050.
The 'continuous throughput' can be checked together with other key figures such as the maximum burst throughput, the available programmable frequencies, among others.
