New versions of the PowerPC 440SP and 440SPe processors include acceleration hardware that will increase the processing rate of both RAID 5 and RAID 6 functionality

Applied Micro Circuits Corp has developed new versions of its PowerPC 440SP and 440SPe processors with acceleration hardware that will increase the processing rate of both RAID 5 and RAID 6 functionality. Whereas RAID 5 provides for the recovery of data lost from a single disc drive failure, RAID 6 provides an added level of fault tolerance allowing for full data recovery in the event of two failed disc drives.

Broader adoption of RAID technology, including the deployment of higher capacity RAID systems and RAID systems based on lower cost SATA drives, have driven demand for the higher level of data protection offered by RAID 6 technology.

Both the PowerPC 440SP and 440SPe RAID-enabled processors target host-attached, internal and external storage, storage area networking (SAN), and network attached storage (NAS) system applications.

AMCC's PowerPC 440SP and 440SPe processors have become widely accepted for their industry leading bandwidth, integration and RAID acceleration hardware support.

Based on the PowerPC 440 superscalar core, the 440SPe is the first processor to offer three independent PCI Express interfaces and one PCI-X interface, meeting the high bandwidth demands for RAID controllers and SAN equipment.

The PowerPC 440SP integrates a rich combination of features including three PCI-X interfaces.

Both processors feature a high bandwidth crossbar-based internal bus, an on-chip double datarate (DDR I/DDR II) SDRAM controller, I2O messaging unit, and other peripherals.

'Integration, flexibility and efficiency options are key advantages we can offer customers with this new RAID hardware support'.

'By providing the versatility of either RAID 5 or RAID 6 in the PowerPC 440SP and 440SPe processors, we have created cost-effective solutions customised to meet users' needs, backed by our experience and an industry-leading architecture', said Sam Fuller, Vice President of Marketing at AMCC.

The highly integrated RAID 6 hardware accelerates the parity generation algorithms and is compatible with the leading RAID 6 deployments in the industry.

'AMCC's latest storage processors provide added functionality and expand the versatility of those products in storage applications where data protection is critical', said Paul Perez, Vice President, Storage, Networking and Infrastructure, Industry Standard Servers, HP.

'These products are based on HP's field proven Advanced Data Guarding RAID 6 technology and provide HP the flexibility to offer our customers Server RAID products with very high reliability and fault tolerance while at the same time achieving leading-edge performance and cost-effectiveness'.

Samples are available now for AMCC's PowerPC 440SP and will be available in Q1 2006 for AMCC's PowerPC 440SPe.

Both products will be available in standard and lead-free RoHS compliant packaging.
