The latest Flash 8bit PIC microcontroller comes with a three-channel low-frequency transponder analogue front end and an integrated Keeloq cryptographic peripheral

Microchip has released a Flash 8bit PIC microcontroller with a three-channel low-frequency (LF) transponder analogue front end and an integrated Keeloq cryptographic peripheral. This is combined with Microchip's low power Nanowatt Technology in a small 20-pin SSOP package. The PIC16F639 is ideal for a wide range of security and other general-purpose applications.

These include automotive passive keyless entry (PKE) systems and tyre pressure monitoring (TPM) systems, property and identity authentication systems, and security systems such as electronic locks, remote security sensors etc.

The three-channel transponder analogue front end provides bidirectional LF communication, as commonly used in PKE and RFID applications.

Keeloq technology is based on a proprietary, nonlinear encryption algorithm that creates a unique transmission on every use, rendering code capture and resend schemes useless.

The PIC16F639 microcontroller also includes: a precision 8MHz internal oscillator with software clock switching; 3.5Kbyte of Flash program memory, 128byte of RAM and 256byte of EEPROM; two analogue comparators; one 8bit timer, one 16bit timer; ultra-low-power wakeup (ULPW) and enhanced watchdog timer (EWDT); software-selectable brownout reset (BOR) and programmable low voltage detect (PLVD); and a wakeup reset (WUR) feature.

The integrated LF analogue front end includes: three channels for omnidirectional 125kHz wireless communications; 3mV input sensitivity; programmable antenna tuning; and support for batteryless operation.

The PIC16F639 is supported by Microchip's world-class development tools, including: the MPLAB integrated development environment (IDE), MPLAB ICE 2000 in-circuit emulator, MPLAB PM3 universal device programmer, PICStart Plus low-cost development system, MPLAB ICD 2 in-circuit debugger/programmer and the new PICkit 2 starter (available in August).

In addition, a complete PIC16F639-based passive keyless entry reference design (APGRD001) is expected to be available in September.

The new PIC microcontroller is available today for sampling in a 20-pin SSOP, and volume production is expected by September.
