Convertor switches modes
to suit conditions
A novel 500mA DC/DC synchronous step-down convertor operates over a wide range of input and output conditions and provides an efficient method of transforming battery or bus voltages
Microchip's new 500mA, DC/DC synchronous step-down convertor operates over a wide range of input and output conditions and provides an efficient method of transforming battery or bus voltage to system requirements. Used in applications such as cellular phones, PDAs, digital cameras and USB-powered devices, the MCP1601 operates in three modes and automatically switches among them to follow a maximum efficiency curve for the given input/output condition.

LDO cuts power for long-term standby
Power-saving low-dropout regulator is ideal for applications requiring long battery runtimes and high tolerance for input-voltage variations
Operating modes include: pulsewidth modulation (PWM), for normal medium-to-high load conditions; pulse frequency modulation (PFM), for light or no-load conditions; and low-dropout mode (LDO), for cases when the input approaches the output voltage.
The DC/DC convertor also has integrated safety features, such as overcurrent, overtemperature and undervoltage lockout (UVLO) protection to safeguard the convertor circuitry and has an externally controllable shutdown mechanism to minimise current drain during system inactivity.
Shutdown current is typically less than 0.1uA.
Input voltage ranges from 2.7 to 5.5V while output voltage ranges from 0.9V up to the input voltage.
UVLO voltage ranges between 2.4 and 2.7V.
Load current capability is up to 500mA continuous.
The MCP1601 can be implemented with a complete ceramic capacitor eliminating the need for larger tantalum caps.
The device is available now in an 8-pin MSOP.
