Debugger and programmer in
one for Flash MCUs
Microchip has a low-cost in-circuit debugger and programmer for its popular PICmicro family of microcontrollers
The PC-based MPLAB ICD 2 supports Microchip's PIC16F and PIC18F Flash microcontrollers and dsPIC digital signal controllers. As new devices become available, users will be able to download new software code into the MPLAB ICD 2, at no cost, creating a highly adaptable tool that eliminates the expense of daughterboard upgrades.

The debugger supports real-time viewing of variables and registers.
A single break point can be set and memory read/writes can also be accomplished.
Additionally, the MPLAB ICD 2 can be used to program or reprogram the microcontroller on the product board.
Other features include built-in overvoltage and short-circuit monitors, support for 2-6V operation, diagnostic LEDs, program memory space erasure with verification, and freeze-on-halt.
The MPLAB ICD 2 is sold as a stand-alone unit or in an evaluation kit that includes a demonstration board and samples of the PIC18F452 and PIC16F877 high-performance Flash microcontrollers.
The demonstration board features a 2 x 16 LCD, temperature sensor, EEPROM, LEDs, piezoelectric sounder and RS232 interface.
Both kits also include the MPLAB IDE (interactive development environment) software.
A universal programming adapter will also be available to allow programming of any DIP-packaged Microchip Flash microcontroller.
