Current Doppler rectifier
boosts PSU efficiency
APW Electronic Solutions has a new 550W pluggable power convertor for telecomms-based CompactPCI applications
The unit derives the 3.3, 5, +12 and -12V CompactPCI voltages from the industry standard 48V DC; efficiency is better than 80% and the module is only 6U x 8HP in size, giving a very high current density. Optimised to meet the requirements of the telecomms industry, the unit provides N+1 redundancy, overload, overvoltage and short-circuit protection, full current sharing between all positive voltage rails and industry standard DIN M connectors.

The patented Hy-bridge or current Doppler design of rectifier uses standard components to provide high efficiency at low voltage and high currents with low ripple currents, minimising the need for additional filtering circuitry.
The unit also uses a new integrated magnetics design of transformer, an innovative planar technology giving high efficiency in a low profile design.
The combination of Hy-bridge rectifier, integrated magnetics transformer and synchronous rectification breaks new ground in PSU design, producing a unit with outstanding performance at today's low voltage/high currents operating conditions.
The module's removable cover is extensively pierced to assist airflow through the device and the extruded aluminium body is milled to induce micro-turbulence in the airflow, again to improve cooling.
The PSU is an integral part of the APW CompactPCI toolbox, an additional element in the integrated family of backplanes, extender cards, power supplies, mechanics and development systems supporting the CompactPCI architecture.
