A dual buck controller with pulsewidth modulation provides high-efficiency DC/DC power conversion in a range of applications
Analog Devices is expanding its family of power management switching regulators with the ADP1823 dual buck controller with pulsewidth modulation (PWM), which provides high-efficiency DC/DC power conversion in a range of applications. The device generates two independent output rails, as low as 0.6V, from an input of 3 to 20V and enables synchronisation to an external clock up to 1MHz.

The high switching frequency generated by the two channels reduces the amount of capacitance required by the device and reduces the bill of materials (BOM) and related costs, while the expanded voltage range enables a flexible solution for designers of power management systems.
The ADP1823 reduces the need for large capacitors and inductors typically required by buck controllers, lowering overall system BOM costs by as much as 15%, compared with competing devices.
The ADP1823 offers two independent channels, which operate 180 degrees out of phase to reduce stress on the input capacitor.

The device operates at a pin-selectable frequency of either 300 or 600kHz or it can be synchronised to an external 300kHz to 1MHz clock.
The device provides designers the flexibility of generating two independent output voltages from an input of 3 to 20V.
Each buck controller can be configured to provide an output from 0.6V to 85% of the input voltage and will drive large MOSFETs for point-of-load regulators.
The ADP1823 provides an accuracy of +/-0.85% from 0 to 70C, which allows the output voltage to remain constant even when the input voltage varies.
The two outputs contain individual 'power-good' pins, offering current limit protection and reducing the chance of thermal overload by shutting down the board's power supply when faults are detected.
In addition, a tracking feature ensures the ADP1823's voltage rails are powered up in the right order to prevent damage to other devices in the circuit.
Additional features offered by the ADP1823 include soft-start, which minimises inrush currents, and reverse current limit protection, which prevents the part from being damaged against pre-charged outputs.
Using the ADP1823 in conjunction with ADI's recently introduced ADM1175/6/7/8 hot swap controllers, designers can create reliable and efficient power supplies for a variety of applications.
The ADP1823 is available in volume production now.
It is priced at $2.10 per unit in 1000-piece quantities and is packaged in a 5 x 5mm, 32-pin LFCSP (lead-frame chip-scale package).
The device is specified over the industrial temperature range (-40 to +85C).
