Processor powers satellite radio platform
The ADSP-BF539 Blackfin processor has been used by VoiceBox Technologies in a voice-enabled XM satellite radio reference platform for the automotive industry
The reference platform will allow drivers to use conversational speech to search and access XM Radio's 160 digital entertainment channels of commercial-free music and premier sports, news, talk radio, and entertainment. VoiceBox's unique conversational voice search capabilities will enable drivers to simply talk to their XM radios, to search and control channels, raise and lower the volume, or ask for traffic reports, stock quotes, sports, and weather.

Headquartered in Bellevue, Washington, VoiceBox is a leading innovator in conversational voice search and control technologies.
'Our processor selection was heavily weighted toward finding the right architecture to support the convergence of complex data, media, and communication requirements', said Tom Freeman, cofounder and Senior Vice President of Marketing at VoiceBox Technologies.
'Any processor can be made to do almost anything; the trick is to do it efficiently and enable a great user experience'.

Inertial measurement unit delivers performance and functionality previously reserved for defence, aerospace and other high-end applications, at approximately one tenth the cost
'Blackfin has the features we need to satisfy these requirements'.
To achieve convergence and meet its specifications, VoiceBox chose Analog Devices' Blackfin processor for its high performance, economical cost, ample third-party software support and EZ-Kit rapid development tools, on which Voicebox was able to perform much of its initial development.
VoiceBox chose Green Hills Software's small, fast, and royalty-free Velosity microkernel for real-time operating system (RTOS) support and Posix system interfaces.
The voice-enabled satellite radio platform makes full use of Blackfin's integrated SPI and serial ports (SPORTs) for control of onboard peripherals and displays.
The processor's general-purpose I/O (GPIO) pins enable bank addressing of Flash memory so that persistent storage is not limited by the address bus width.
VoiceBox used Green Hills Software's complete support package for Blackfin reference boards and advanced debugging features in the Multi IDE to enable a significantly reduced development schedule for this product.
'VoiceBox is on the road to redefining how drivers access programming and information in their cars', said John Croteau, General Manager, Convergent Platforms and Services Group, Analog Devices.
'And Blackfin will be there delivering the combination of efficient signal and control processing that's demanded'.
'When an embedded application is network- and media-intensive yet is bounded by power consumption and space constraints, developers can look to Blackfin to bring it all together in one sleek package'.
