Nucleus Energy Manager software allows developers to increase energy performance resulting in extended battery life for handheld devices

Accelerated Technology, a Mentor Graphics division, has unveiled its new Nucleus Energy Manager (EM) software. Combined with the ARM Intelligent Energy Management (IEM) software technology and Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS) hardware, the Nucleus EM software allows developers to increase energy performance resulting in extended battery life for handheld devices.

These include smart phones, feature phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), game consoles, and media players.

Today's portable, consumer devices contain a wide range of features that demand a higher capacity for processing power and battery life.

For instance, users play audio and movie clips and capture video from onboard cameras.

With always-on connectivity, they expect mobile e-mail access and Internet browsing.

Mobile gaming is becoming ever more popular, and users now expect higher resolution colour displays and better game responsiveness.

The Nucleus EM software enables the use of the ARM IEM technology at the RTOS level.

ARM's IEM technology, combined with the Nucleus EM software, meets high processing and energy management needs by offering developers a hardware and software combination that allows them to extend standard battery life in mobile applications.

Additionally, this technology provides developers with options to increase device functionality using standard battery life, or to use a smaller, less expensive battery to serve existing functionality.

'For our IEM solution to be more effective and use its predictive performance setting capabilities, it needs integrated software support from the RTOS', said Kevin McIntyre, IEM Product Manager, ARM.

'The combinations of our industry-leading IEM technology with the Nucleus RTOS and the Nucleus EM extensions offer excellent battery life improvement capabilities to developers of ARM Powered mobile solutions'.

'We first demonstrated the Nucleus EM software at ARM's Partner Meeting in August receiving praise for our implementation, support and commitment to IEM.

The end benefit goes to our customers making portable consumer electronics and to the public who use these devices', said Robert Day, Director of Marketing, Accelerated Technology Division.

'Consumer electronics, especially portable electronic devices, demand a robust solution'.

'Our Nucleus EM software, when combined with our Nucleus RTOS and Nucleus middleware, offers just that'.

The Nucleus embedded software is sold in source code format and without royalty fees.

Licences for the Nucleus software begin at US $12,495 per seat.
