Abacus has introduced visible light sensors it reckons match the response of the human eye more closely than any other device, to simplify circuit design and deliver an improved end user experience

The TDK BCS series light sensors use amorphous silicon semiconductor thin-film sensor technology, which displays a spectrum sensitivity characteristic almost identical to that of the human eye. The resulting current output closely matches human perception of visibility. The output is also independent of infra red contained in the light source, enabling consistent behaviour under many different conditions including sunlight, incandescent bulbs and fluorescent lighting.

Further benefits of TDK's silicon thin film technology include very low sensitivity to ambient temperature fluctuations, allowing equipment to function uniformly throughout a wide variety of environments.

The surface of the sensor is also highly resistant to damage such as scratching, or electrostatic damage.

In all of these respects, the BCS series sensors significantly outperform conventional phototransistor sensors.

Output variability is also within +/-20% of nominal, where a conventional photodiode output can drift by as much as 50%.

BCS sensors therefore also save the design effort necessary to build-in tolerance of such wide variations.

As a result, the TDK BCS-series visible light sensors deliver cost savings as well as higher performance in automatic backlight controls for equipment such as handheld analysers, diagnostic instruments and industrial controls, as well as high volume consumer goods such as PDAs, cellphones and media players.

Use of colour displays and large screen dimensions are placing a growing premium on dimming as a power saving measure.

Further applications include building services controls such as adaptive room lighting, streetlight controls and other municipal lighting installations, buses and trains, cars, flashlight control and diaphragm control for digital cameras, and scan line adjustment in projection TVs.

TDK BCS sensors are RoHS-compliant and capable of withstanding lead-free reflow temperatures.
