Abacus has released a miniature embedded MCU board that supports pen-drive-style drag and drop of files such as executable routines, wav sounds or data. This capability is enabled by a low-footprint, power-safe embedded file system for applications requiring low cost and complexity. Developed by Abacus field applications team, the board hardware is based on a Texas Instruments MSP430 16bit MCU with a 64Mbit serial Flash memory.
A plug and play COM port driver is also provided as part of the solution, allowing the board to be managed using standard Windows PC interfaces in the same way as a USB pen drive.
The board incorporates a 3.5mm audio jack, allowing direct playback of sounds dropped onto the device simply by connecting an external speaker.
The board can also be used as a sound recorder or data logger, and the files can be easily dragged and dropped from the onboard Flash onto a PC hard disk.

Abacus collaborated with file system specialist HCC-Embedded to develop the software support, which provides a convenient way of implementing a programmable sounder unit for intelligent alarms, automatic announcements and security applications.
The design features the HCC-Embedded Tiny file system, and also takes advantage of HCC-Embedded's UC-Sync software to enable easy connection to a PC.
MSP430 MCU integrated peripherals, including ADC and DAC units, UARTs, IrDA port and LCD driver, also allow the board to be used in a wide variety of data logging and remote control applications, bringing the added advantage of an embedded file system for enhanced ease-of-use and sophisticated features.
A limited number of sample units are available.
Various options for volume production are possible, including use of the IP as a reference design.
