Universal Instruments Corp is increasing its commitment to China with the opening of a new US $1 million research and training technology centre in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, China.
The new 600m2 Technology Excellence Centre is a world-class laboratory and applications engineering facility that will provide hands-on process and manufacturing training support for existing and potential customers in China.
In addition, the Technology Centre will be used to demonstrate Universal's unique process and productivity solutions as well as the company's renowned production and semiconductor assembly equipment solutions.
Located at the new facility is a series of Universal's latest advanced assembly machines, including its latest 4797 chip shooter and GSM Flexjet system, as well as DEK printers, Vitronics reflow ovens, and GSMxs advanced semiconductor assembly machines.
At the heart of the line will be Universal's Dimensions software.
"This a significant milestone in our strategic growth plans for China and Asia", said Ian McEvoy, President of Universal Instruments.
"China represents the single most important market in the immediate global future for Universal.
While our business is to supply assembly equipment to electronics and semiconductor manufacturers, at Universal we constantly strive to look after our customer manufacturers through process partnership.
To achieve this, the new Technology Centre will ensure that users of Universal equipment are comfortable with the assembly processes involved in their designs, including adoption of the latest board and component assembly technologies such as flipchip".
Currently, Universal is one of the few equipment companies that is actually manufacturing machines in China, and this provides an advantage logistically, as well as demonstrating the company's long-term commitment to the China market.
According to McEvoy, Asia is likely to become the world's largest producer of manufacturing equipment for the electronics market in the near future.
"At Universal, we have projected that around 40% of our global activities, from sales and marketing, to design and manufacture, will be located in Asia, with China playing a pivotal role", said McEvoy.
