Tyco Electronics' Global Application Tooling Division (GATD) has dramatically reduced lead times for its highly successful HD-I (heavy-duty industrial) applicator. By investing almost Eur 300,000 in an initiative designed to ensure every part number is kept in stock at all times, the company has significantly reduced lead times for applicator wearing spares - cutting delivery times from weeks to days - to further enhance customer service and enable customers to minimise applicator downtime. By implementing an enhanced, automated restocking system, this initiative will deliver real benefits to manufacturers throughout Europe, and represents a significant step forward in customer support.

Together with improved spare part ordering, the streamlined process also means reduced lead times for new, complete applicators, with fewer components requiring procurement and instant availability of parts.

Moreover, the initiative brings benefits to customers operating with HDM (heavy duty miniature) applicators, which use some of the same insulation and wire crimpers as the HD-I.

These benefits have been delivered by integrating the US and European operations to form a seamless supply pipeline which uses automatic procedures to flag minimum stock levels and trigger auto-replenishment.

A specified quantity of safety stock is constantly held in the USA, therefore rather than manufacturing new parts in Europe, stock can be ordered instantly, with only transit time - typically around 48 hours - before customers receive their orders.

With very high levels of crimp precision, the HD-I is designed to meet entry-level market needs, and is particularly established in sectors such as white goods, consumer electronics and automotive.

Offering an improved feed track assembly, which not only means very simple bellmouth adjust, but also uses common parts to help reduce inventory of spares, the product also features a quick change design to reduce downtime to a minimum and is available for both end and side-feed applications.

"In today's highly competitive environment, it is essential to minimise downtime, and this investment demonstrates our strong commitment to the marketplace", commented Werner Lothmann, Tyco Electronics GATD's Head of Marketing EMEA, India and South America.

Lothmann continued, "with around 40% sales growth over the last year, the HD-I has a vast European user base and we are committed to service and support as a key differentiator.

This new initiative enables Tyco Electronics to deliver the optimum level of service that will help contribute to the ongoing success of our customers".
