Tyco Electronics has released 40Gb/s Quad Data Rate (QDR) speed Paralight cable assemblies in a Quad Small Form-Factor Pluggable (QSFP) connector format.

This new cable assembly can run up to 100 metres, although longer lengths are being evaluated.

Dennis Hess, business development director of Tyco, said: 'As QDR speeds become a larger segment of the market, active optical Paralight cable assemblies become economically viable for intra- and inter-cabinet links.

'The much smaller and lighter optical cable becomes more of a necessity in terms of lower weight and size to accommodate increases in air flow needs and effective routing of significant numbers of cables in clustered systems.' Tyco Electronics has already demonstrated market viability with volume deployment of Double Data Rate (DDR) 20Gb/s speed QSFP and CX4 optical assemblies.

Tyco Electronics was one of the first to have DDR assemblies running at 100 metres approved by the Infiniband Trade Association (IBTA).
