The BCS8 Series surface mount resistor is reckoned to be unique among current sense resistors.

Faced with an ever growing demand to provide design engineers with more watts but in a smaller footprint, TT electronics BI Technologies SMT Division has developed a series of metal current chip resistors with a power rating up of to 8W within an outline of only 6.4 x 12.8 x 2.5mm (5025).

The BCS8 Series surface mount resistor is reckoned to be unique among current sense resistors.

With its 8W power rating, TCRs as low as 30ppm/C and operating temperature rating of -55 to +175C, the BCS8 resistors deliver excellent performance, making them ideal for a variety of applications that might not otherwise have been served with a surface mount component.

The resistor is constructed using a low-resistance, low-inductance, metal element with plated terminals giving added measurement consistency that gives the device its extended power and temperature ratings The current detect chip resistors have a rating current of 90A (at 1mohm), a maximum current of 126A (2.5s, one-off) and a series inductance of 5nH.

Resistance range for the BCS8 Series is 0.5 to 10mohm in tolerances as low as +1.0%.

Commenting on the new product innovation, John Mackay, Managing Director of BI Technologies' SMT Division says: "The power rating and pulse durability combined with the smaller footprint of the BCS8 Series makes it an exceptionally versatile resistor for design engineers".

"Most flat current sense components are rated for a maximum of 3 to 4W under ideal conditions".

"The BCS8's power rating of 8W makes it ideal for a number of applications not unusually suited to surface mount components".

"The series is suitable for all current sense applications, including over current detection in battery chargers, servomotor control circuits and DC/DC, DC/DA and intelligent power modules".

"Additional applications include industrial PC modules (IPM) and precision measurement systems, as well as current detection circuits in high-speed CPU peripherals and motor drive H-bridge circuits".

BI Technologies' comprehensive application engineering and design support, available to customers worldwide, enable it to provide devices to meet customers' bespoke requirements.

The series can also be manufactured to custom customer requirements.

Lead times are from stock to 6 weeks.

Samples are available for engineering evaluation and customer prototypes.
