Toshiba has developed a new fibre-optic transmitter/receiver pairspecifically for the demanding environment of automotive LANs.The new Toslink transmitter and receiver devices operate attemperatures ranging from -40 to +85C, and deliver data at a rateof 125Mbit/s (optional specification of 150Mbit/s) - more thanthree times faster than current optical transmitters andreceivers for automotive LAN applications.

The TOTU133 transmitter and TORU133 receiver are thelatest additions to Toshiba's Toslink series of signaltransmission devices that convert digital electrical signals intooptical signals.
Use of optical fibre instead of coaxial cable ortwisted-pair cable achieves noise-free operation at hightransmission speeds.
Toslink applications include high-endconnections for digital AV equipment such as DVD and CD players,high-speed data transmission for IEEE1394 industrial networks,and entertainment LANs in vehicles.
The TOTU 133 transmitterincorporates a high-speed indium-gallium phosphide (InGaP) redLED and driver circuit and the TORU 133 receiver integrates aphotodiode and waveform-reshaping circuit on a single chip.
A3.3V PECL interface is offered on both devices, simplifyingconnection with peripheral circuits.
While the standard dataratefor the new devices is specified as 125Mbit/s, theTOTU133/TORU133 can also offer an optional specification of150Mbit/s.
Current automotive LAN applications use opticaldevices that conform to the D2B (10Mbit/s digital databus) or theMOST (50Mbit/s Media Oriented System Transport) standard.
Byusing Toshiba's new Toslink devices, designers can deliverhigh-speed automotive LANs that are ten times faster than D2B andthree times faster than MOST systems.
The new devices operatefrom a supply voltage of 3.3 +/-0.3V and have package dimensionsof just 6.3 x 6.9 x 2.3mm.
The minimum receivable power is-22.5dBm at 125Mbit/s, and the fibre output power is rated atbetween -7 to -3dBm.
