Processor takes memory onboard for big programs

A new 32bit RISC microprocessor combines low-power operation with high-capacity memory to deliver a single-chip solution to the control of large-scale programs.

Toshiba has developed a 32bit RISC microprocessor that combines low-power operation with high-capacity memory to deliver a single-chip solution to the control of large-scale programs. The new TMP1962 integrates 1Mbyte of mask ROM or Flash memory with 40Kbyte of RAM and a variety of peripherals in a compact 281-pin FBGA package measuring just 13 x 13 x 1.4mm. Ideal for portable electronics applications including digital cameras and PDAs, the TMP1962 uses Toshiba's TX19 32bit RISC core.

This MIPS-based core operates at speeds up to 40.5MHz and is designed for high code efficiency and low power consumption.

The processor's ROM and RAM memory can be accessed in a single clock cycle, further optimising system performance.

The TMP1962 incorporates a number of on-board peripherals including a DMA controller, 17 channels of versatile 8/16/32bit timers, a 24-channel ADC, a serial bus interface, and a seven-channel general-purpose serial interface.

The device also offers inputs for eleven external interrupts and 14 key-on-wakeup inputs suitable for applications where key inputs are used to switch a system from standby mode.

An onboard debug function simplifies and speeds system development.

In the case of the Flash memory version of the device, support for onboard ROM data reprogramming further simplifies the software debug process.

The TMP1962 operates with an internal voltage of 1.35 to 1.65V and I/O voltages from 1.65 to 3.3V.
