Toshiba Electronics has joined forces with embedded system specialist IAR Systems and leading systems software developer MontaVista Software to produce an embedded Linux development platform

The new Topas LX starter kit will significantly speed the design and prototyping of telecomms systems, Internet appliances, networking hardware and other applications that use the increasingly popular Linux operating system. The new Topas LX starter kit is available from IAR Systems and can be supplied with Toshiba's 92MHz TX3912 32bit RISC processor or the 59MHz TX3911 32bit RISC processor with integrated half VGA LCD controller.

Using the kit, designers can easily evaluate all application hardware and software and rapidly develop working prototypes of Embedded Linux systems based on these Toshiba processors.

Designed for maximum flexibility and 'plug-and-play' operation, the Topas LX starter kit is a fully modular system that is pre-installed with embedded Linux based on the Journeyman (Evaluation) Edition from MontaVista Software and supplied with a Linux support package (LSP).

The kit comprises a CPU board, a separate main development board, and all the software, schematics, cables and tools needed to allow engineers to begin immediate, 'out-of-box' development.

Toshiba's Topas LX development board has its own power supply and integrates 2Mbyte of boot EPROM, a 10Base-T Ethernet IC, an M-Systems 'disk-on-chip' device, and a battery-backed real time clock (RTC).

A PS/2 keyboard connector, an LCD connector and interfaces for Ethernet, and RS232 are also provided, as is a connection for a phone line.

The Topas LX CPU board integrates the TX3912 or TX3911 processor with 16Mbyte of Flash ROM and 32Mbyte of SDRAM.

A debug connector allows the CPU board to be connected into the user's target board while interfacing with the Topas LX development board.

As well as the Linux operating system and kernel and a complete MIPS little endian Linux file system, the Topas LX starter kit CD-ROM offers device drivers for a wide range of interfaces including keyboard, mouse, touch screen, Ethernet and Flash memory.

Support for a Flash file system and a full set of documentation is also provided.

The software tools in this kit can be installed on any PC running RedHat Linux 6.2 or 7.0.

MontaVista Linux Professional Edition is available as a product subscription from MontaVista Software that supports Toshiba's TX3927 and TX4927 processors.
