Regulator saves automotive battery power
Toshiba reckons its latest voltage regulator IC for automotive applications achieves the world's lowest power consumption in this class of device
The TB9001FN IC has a power consumption of 95uA, which is approximately 20% lower than the most efficient of Toshiba's existing voltage regulator ICs. Such low power consumption has been achieved by employing BiCD process technology and optimised internal circuits. As well as offering low power consumption the new IC can also integrate a 32kHz subclock circuit.

High-speed CMOS 2bit dual supply bus switches provide an interface between two nodes at differing voltage levels
This circuit replaces external components such as the shock-sensitive crystals and ceramics that are now used to activate antitheft systems when a vehicle's engine is switched off and the microcontroller LSI is in sleep mode.
These features offer longer battery life, as well as stable output voltage, across a wide range of operating temperatures.
Recent advances in automotive electronics have brought more and more microcontroller LSIs into vehicles, including those to control antitheft system, autolock system and car area network system.
These advanced features consume more current, even when the engine is switched off, placing more demands on the vehicle battery.
Toshiba's new voltage regulator IC supports the automobile industry in finding a solution to this problem.
With a power consumption of only 95uA and the integration of the subclock circuit, the new IC contributes to a longer battery life and a more reliable system.
The TB9001FN offers an output voltage of 5V +/-3% and can handle a maximum input voltage of 45V for 1s at 25C.
Built-in functionality includes low voltage reset and power on reset as well as a watchdog timer and an adjustable current limiter (when used with an external resistor).
An external output transistor allows the delivery of optimum output current.
Supplied in a plastic shrink SSOP20 package, the TB9001FN has an operating temperature of -40 to +125C.
Samples are available now and mass production is scheduled for the second quarter of 2003.
