TranSwitch is sampling worldwide OEM customers with its TXC-04226 EtherMapT-3, a highly integrated OC-3 mapping device designed for adapting Ethernet traffic onto existing Sonet/SDH transport networks. The EtherMap-3 mapper is exceptionally well suited to help carriers and service providers harvest the value of their existing Sonet/SDH networks.
For communications OEMs, the device is a simple and cost-effective addition to existing metro access and edge equipment, making it easy for carriers to extend their current platforms and quickly ramp up new revenue-generating services without incurring major capital expense for forklift system upgrades.
Enthusiastically received by network equipment suppliers, EtherMap-3 has generated more design win momentum than any new product in TranSwitch's history.
The device has garnered numerous design wins with top telecommunications OEMs worldwide.
In addition to North America, demand for the versatile mapper is especially strong in Asia and Europe.
Applications for EtherMap-3 include enhanced add/drop and terminal multiplexers, multiservice provisioning platforms (MSPPs), multiservice WAN switches, integrated access devices (IADs), network termination units (NTUs) and electronics for wireless backhaul.

TXC-OMNI is a silicon and software solution that will help telecomms equipment vendors to develop next generation add drop multiplexers, digital crossconnects and hybrid TDM/data switching systems
Tier 1 telecomms customers have reported that the EtherMap-3 has achieved an industry first by combining unique TDM Sonet/SDH low and high order mapping features with recently standardised Ethernet encapsulation protocols for flexible broadband EoS transport.
Yoram Holtz, VP Marketing at RAD Data Communications in Israel, stated: "RAD selected TranSwitch's EtherMap-3 OC-3 device because it was the first mapper on the market to offer features that support and enhance our emerging line of Ethernet-over-Sonet/SDH products.
Our only alternative would have been to develop an ASIC-based design on our own, which would have required a major investment of resources.
Because we were able to partner with TranSwitch early in our design cycle, we could codevelop the CPE platform and speed our time-to-market".
This robust carrier class VLSI mapper effectively bridges the gap between Sonet/SDH and Ethernet systems.
It reduces the need for higher layer routing functions, offers greater bandwidth granularity in service provisioning and maximises bandwidth efficiency for EoS applications.
Rob Schwaber, TranSwitch Product Marketing Manager, commented: "We are very pleased to deliver to our worldwide OEM customers the industry-leading EtherMap-3 OC-3 mapper, enabling them to implement a high priority EoS feature in their existing systems.
This represents a critical milestone in launching our EtherMap family of products, the most aggressive and comprehensive product line in the industry for the rapidly emerging EoS market.
EtherMap-3 anticipation was unprecedented - many customers have designed their systems around the part and were prepared to use it as soon as it became available.
Now that the device is sampling, we can begin satisfying the significant demand with an extensive hardware- and software-based evaluation platform".
As a disruptive technology that links the Sonet and packet worlds, EtherMap-3 supports eight 10/100 Ethernet ports or one gigabit Ethernet port for a broad range of both Sonet/SDH and Ethernet processing capability.
Each port can be configured for a different protocol to create variable bandwidth virtual concatenation (VC) groups for data transport without wasting costly leased line Sonet/SDH bandwidth.
EtherMap-3 incorporates generic framing procedure (GFP), link capacity adjustment scheme (LCAS), link access procedure for SDH (LAPS), link address procedure framed-mode (LAPF) and the virtual tributary/virtual container (VT/VC) concatenation standards as well.
Device features include a 10/100/1000Mbit/s Ethernet media access control (MAC) function, a buffering system, and VT/TU and VC-3/VC-4 mapping.
Harpreet Chohan, TranSwitch Manager of Customer Engineering, asserted: "Service providers worldwide need a method to leverage, extend and evolve their existing Sonet/SDH networks to efficiently transport Ethernet traffic in the MAN/WAN.
By combining EoS standards such as virtual concatenation, LCAS, GFP and LAPS and existing Ethernet MAC and Sonet/SDH mapping technology, EtherMap-3's advanced functionality provides a powerful non-disruptive solution that enables carriers to rapidly implement profitable new Ethernet services using existing Sonet/SDH infrastructure".
The full-featured EtherMap-3 family of products complements and expands TranSwitch's current Sonet/SDH mapper line.
When combined with TranSwitch's Phast-3N terminator and TL3M and TEMx28 mappers, the EtherMap-3 provides a converged TDM and Ethernet over Sonet mapping solution.
The device also integrates seamlessly with other Ethernet switches/PHYs and line interface components that incorporate industry-standard interfaces.
EtherMap-3 is a low power 1.8 and 3.3V 0.18 micron CMOS technology VLSI device that is rated for industrial temperature range operation (-40 to +85C).
It meets all of the latest ITU-T standards.
TranSwitch provides a full suite of EtherMap-3 support materials, including an easy-to-use API-based device driver, application notes, BSDL file, IBIS model, evaluation kit, and comprehensive documentation - all backed by TranSwitch's world-class application engineering services.
The mapper is priced at $125 each in 10K quantities.
