TES Electronic Solutions has been appointed to the role of technical director for the second phase of the European Commission's PULSERS (Pervasive ultrawideband Low Spectral Energy Radio Systems) project. The company will also have leadership of two work packages within the project. The first phase of the PULSERS project started in January 2004 within the 6th Framework of the EU-IST Programme (FP6).
The second phase runs from January 2006 until June 2008 and has a budget of Eur 15 million.
PULSERS aims to develop innovative ultrawideband (UWB) radio technology and solutions ranging from technology developments through to fully working demonstrators and prototypes.
These will cover sets of innovative applications from wireless data and multimedia delivery solutions, to localisation, tracking and body area solutions.
The PULSERS project brings together a large group of experts in many disciplines to provide the research and development activities necessary to produce innovative solutions across this broad spread of technology and applications.
With the active participation of 38 elected international partners, PULSERS will focus on short-range wireless systems based on novel UWB physical layer (PHY) and medium access control (MAC) concepts and technologies that will enable high datarate transmission in support of multimedia applications as well as systems supporting data transactions combined with position location and tracking.

PULSERS aims at advances in the area of silicon technology to make UWB chipsets and modules economical and low-power consumers.
In addition, the issues of coexistence and integration with current wireless technologies in realistic user environments will be addressed.
Significant efforts will be made towards the introduction and acceptance of UWB radio technology in the appropriate worldwide regulatory bodies and standardisation forums.
The project co-ordinator (GWT Germany) and technical director (TES Germany) will work together to ensure the maximum commitment, organisation and dedication to quality results from each of the PULSERS participants.
The PULSERS second phase will address a range of demonstrator and prototype platforms: a very-high-datarate MB-OFDM UWB platform for wireless transmission rates over 1Gbit/s; a very-high-datarate analogue modulated UWB platform for wireless transmission rates over 1Gbit/s; a localisation and tracking low-datarate UWB platform; a body-area-network low-datarate UWB platform; a low-datarate sensor UWB platform; and a mobile phone with a UWB transmission platform.
With its major technology and management role in the project, TES is establishing itself as a reliable, highly innovative and leading partner within the PULSERS consortium, which includes organisations such as: Philips, Mitsubishi, STM, Thales, Telefonica, Freescale, Wisair, Sehenheiser, EADS and IMEC.
TES is contributing one of the largest teams of any company in the project, showing the importance of UWB technology to its wireless strategy.
With both its Edinburgh and Stuttgart design centres participating in the project, TES is developing its internal UWB activities from MAC/protocol designs, through physical layer and test-chip design to integration of two dedicated demonstrator platforms.
This project and further seven TES projects on UWB will position TES as a leading knowledge-based B2B company worldwide.
TES is increasing its general visibility in many demanding markets through its participation in standardisation and regulation bodies worldwide.
