Controller to simplify
high-current PSU design
A new multiphase synchronous DC/DC buck controller with integrated adaptive gate drivers aims to simplify high-current power supply designs
The flexible power management device saves valuable board space and simplifies power design for dual-channel, multiphase systems supporting up to 60A, such as double-data rate (DDR) memory banks, point-of-load DC/DC convertors, digital signal processors (DSPs) and ASICs used in telecomms and networking power supplies.

TI's TPS40130 provides significantly higher performance and power efficiency over competing pulsewidth modulation (PWM) power supply solutions.
The controller can support input voltages from 3 to 40V, with output voltages from 0.7 to 6V at greater than 90% efficiency.
The TPS40130 implements fixed frequency, peak current-mode control with single-cycle current balance.
High accuracy current sensing can be implemented with an external sense resistor or lossless DC resistance (DCR) current sensing can be used.
For added performance, an onboard differential load-sense amplifier provides remote load sensing for high current, high accuracy applications.
The TPS40130 is equipped with all supervisory and control features for today's power supplies, including programmable undervoltage lock out and overvoltage protection, power good indicator, synchronisation input, programmable overcurrent protection and selectable load-line programming.
In addition, the differential load sense amplifier provides remote load sensing for high-current applications.
The TPS40130 controller is available in volume from TI and its authorised distributors.
Packaged in a 30-pin TSSOP, suggested resale pricing is $1.30 each in quantities of 1000 units.
TI's easy-to-use TPS40K Designer Software for the TPS40130 will be available in the first quarter of 2005.
