DSP powers up HD encoders

Tandberg Television is using the latest 1GHz TMS320C64x high-performance DSP to power its newly introduced HD encoders for Windows Media 9 Series and MPEG-4 part 10

The latest 1GHz TMS320C64x high-performance DSP generation has been selected by Tandberg Television to power its newly introduced HD encoders for Windows Media 9 Series (EN5980) and MPEG-4 part 10/AVC (H.264) (EN5990). Tandberg Television and TI are working together to deliver end-to-end advanced encoding solutions for Windows Media 9 Series and MPEG-4 part 10, from the video head end to the set top box.

By leveraging its extensive experience with TI, and capitalising on previous standard definition (SD) development using the TMS320C6414 and TMS320C6713 DSPs, Tandberg Television is able to provide ground breaking real-time broadcast quality video/audio encoders, delivering the lowest possible bitrates available today for professional broadcaster, cable, telco and streaming environments.

In addition, Tandberg Television's advanced encoding solutions feature complete integration and interoperability with TI's digital media processor-based set top box family for both Windows Media 9 Series and MPEG-4 part 10.

'With the expertise we have already developed with the C64x from our previous work on SD implementation, and thanks to the pin and code compatibility of TI's new higher performance DSPs, we have been able to develop our new product in record time', says Tim Sheppard, Director of Strategic Development at Tandberg Television.

Operating at a record-setting 1GHz, TI's C6414 DSP is based on the TMS320C64xT DSP core and produced on TI's advanced 90nm copper process technology.

It includes 1Mbyte of on-chip high-speed memory and high-speed peripherals that accelerate applications and processing of real-time data.

Its 64-channel enhanced direct memory access (EDMA) controller delivers input/output efficiency that manages data transfer from system memory at gigabytes per second and three multichannel buffered serial ports (McBSPs) each support 128 time-division multiplex (TDM) channels as well as AC97 and IIS audio interfaces.

For designers of high-performance applications, TI's TMS320C6713 floating-point DSP offers the speed, precision and dynamic range to meet a variety of audio design needs.

Offering 1800MFLOPS processing power at 300MHz, the C6713 offers a cost-effective, flexible solution for high-performance professional audio applications.

Both the C6414 and C6713 are entirely code-compatible with all of TI's TMS320C6000 DSPs, ensuring ease of upgrade and protection of the customer's code investment.
